Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Li-ion

There have been developments on reducing heat generation with Li-ion which require a slight sacrifice in energy density, however the trade-off could be well worth it.
The heat issue is why Li-ion has not generally been the battery of choice for all-electric or hybrid cars to this point.  That's changing. It might not yet be to the point where I would want them in a sub, but I'm keeping things flexible during the design phase to make it as easy as possible to convert if it should become feasible either before or after completion of construction.  We'll see what happens with the cost issue.

I'll try to return to this subject at another time, but right now I'm very busy preparing for a trip that won't be nearly as much fun as the trip to Ft. Pierce.

Interesting is right. Especially the fires from thermal overloads. They might be workable, but I definitely wouldn't want them in the sub with me.

That may be worth looking at. A new battery pack for a Prius is about $4K and they come with a 10 year-100,000 mile replacement warranty. The thing is, the engine is continually charging the pack so it doesn't get deep discharges like a traction battery system would.
I heard the new A123 battery company production facility in Michigan will be making Li-ion batteries available soon for the general public. That should be interesting.
