Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Fiberglass hulls

Jon,
I got the dimensions off the E bay article David posted when they were trying to sell the molds.
Then I tracked down the article you just posted a reference to.
I also put the hull diameter dimensions through a pressure program at the time & came up with 2 inches thick for the shell. The 4 inches was possibly reinforcement around the
hatch area. I'm needing 4x my hull thickness for reinforcement round there.
It's all good thrashing out this fiberglass issue because it comes up periodically
& the smarter we are on this subject the better.
Alan

Alan,

The 2 inch reference was in a newspaper story. The web page text written by the co-owner of the sub said that the hull was "up to 4 inches thick". It's obvious looking at the photos that the entire sub was not 4 inches thick however, so it's not at all clear which parts of the sub the builders felt needed that kind of thickness. Was it just where the two halves met at the flange, or was there some area of the sub that required 4 inches of material? The web page isn't specific enough and in my opinion is too general in content to be a reliable resource for determining the capabilities of that particular sub. You are definitely on the right track by planning to use an engineer well versed in FRP materials and capabilities to provide you guidance.
