RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] submarine trivia

It is because early submarines were carried between distant operations on the deck of a ship.  The proper name for a vessel that can be carried on the deck of a ship is a boat.

Hi David,

It's not Das Boat, It's Das Boot & got its name from Admiral Ernst Otto von Diederich who served in the North German confederation, the Prussian navy & finally the German imperial navy. He was reportedly boarding a prototype U-boat when a wave swept over it filling his boot with water.

On taking it off he yelled out "Das Boot" & the name stuck as the nickname for the submarine.
