Hi David,
It's not Das Boat, It's Das Boot & got its name from
Admiral Ernst Otto von Diederich who served in the North German confederation,
the Prussian navy & finally the German imperial navy. He was reportedly
boarding a prototype U-boat when a wave swept over it filling his boot with
water.
On taking it off he yelled out "Das Boot" & the name
stuck as the nickname for the submarine.

is it that submarines are referred to as "boats"? Das Boat for
instance... Take a stab at this and
guess if need be. You may find your not far off from the actual true answer. I
