Hello David The term is not das boat but das Boot and it comes from U-Boot and that is from Unterseeboot or in english underwater boat. At the beginnings the submarines were small and refered as boats example Fultons Nautilus (1801) with only about 6 m long a small boat or other small vessels all were small. Why is it that submarines are referred to as "boats"? Das Boat for instance...
