Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] periscope

You can find LCD screens that are way cheaper than a netbook. Look for camcorder monitor screens. They're tiny screens used as optional on- camera monitors on video cameras that only have a viewfinder. They just have a video in receptacle, there's virtually no setup and no software. Also mini-TVs serve the same purpose. The screens are about 3-4 inches.

Thanks Jon,
Have been running around looking into this.
I was tempted with the thought of having several differant cameras mounted around the sub. It's a great idea. I found a 10" netbook for $200-NZ but am wanting a screen around 4" or less as I'm building very small, & the smaller you go with these netbooks the more you have to pay. For others with bigger boats this would be a good option. Just take your laptop down
& plug in your cameras.

Alan,

Most web cams are universally USB these days unless it is a high- end cam that comes with it's own PCI based controller card. Ipods and such do not have the capacity for drivers, or the power necessary, to run the web cam. Most USB devices, including web cams, are parasite devices which take their power directly from the host computer. However, a small netbook won't cost you much more than an ipod these days and you could have multiple USB cams feeding into it with the benefit of being able to view from multiple angles and record the diving session.

Thanks Frank & Greg,
Frank the camera end doesn't seem a problem, I could use a web cam.
The problem being I would need a computer to go between it & the LCD
screen. I was looking at all sorts of screens including Ipods & MP3s that play videos but there wasn't anything I could just plug a web cam into & was advised that to make the circuitry to link the camera to a screen would be quite difficult. I think my best bet is to buy a cheap camcorder & as said wire the lense at the top of a mast & detach the screen from the body (if possible). I just missed out on one
due to my poor bidding ability that went for $53- NZ that could
to take a 4GB card. I have an electronic geek friend with $40,000- worth of remotely controlled
video cameras, so if I run into trouble "no problem".
Greg it would be neat to find that controlled spotlight site. Was just thinking this morning how good it would be to temporarily have your periscope mast off at an angle & video your submarine in action. I had thought of the idea of using a car side mirror mechanism to rotate lights or a camera but the
angles would be limited.
