Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] The Great 9-Week Stavanger Christmas Party

Florida is correct. It was 70+ degrees F today. I rode my motorcycle down to the shop for some work. Light winds, clear blue sky. Kind of like Norway in January, only different. Carsten and I have been talking about me taking a trip to Germany this year (he came to Florida the last time). If I get that far, I will certainly try to make arrangements to jump the Baltic and come see you. And, of course, you'd be welcome here in Florida anytime.

Good to hear that you enjoyed your time right here in my neighborhood,
and should you ever get a chance to come back, please let me know.
My hometown is Bryne, some 40 miles due south of Stavanger, where we still
wait for the ice to withdraw from our gardens. So I guess you're right, it
is coolish here... Your neighborhood must be a whole lot warmer. Was it
Florida, or am I way off target?

Best regards,
Jens Laland

** Jens,
**
** Where do you live in Norway? I spent lots of time between Trondheim,
** Bergen and Stavanger. Coolish weather, as I recall. Lots of deep water,
** too. We did PC-8's ABS recertifications in the fjord just a few kilometers
** from the city dock in Haugesund. 250 meter depth? No problem. Right over
** there.
**
** If you ever get to the maritime museum out there (at Haugesund) have a
** look at the old anchors and chain used to line the sidewalks and some of
** the parking lot up front. Your's truly and co.salvaged all that off the
** old whaling anchorage while training. I think we got two shots of chain
** and a couple of anchors. We donated it all immediately, more out of a
** collective guilty conscience than anything. No one should have that much
** fun and call it work!
**
** That was during what has now come to be known in (modern) Norse Mythology
** as "The Great 9-Week Stavanger Christmas Party." The oldest guy on the
** crew was the ship's engineer, who was 40. The other sub pilot and I were
** both 34, the ship's captain was 29. Everyone else was younger. We had a 55
** meter submersible support ship, two rental Benzes, the cash box and no
** adult supervision. A grand time was had by all, as you might well imagine.
**
** Lovely women in Norway, too. Oh, my. Yes.
**
** Vance
