Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] RFC - Standard Thru-Hull Electrical Connector
Yes, we do. This topic is forking into various discussions which is
fogging the original intent of the bulkhead connector RFC.
The digikey connectors are not associated with the bulkhead connector
but with the OTS hardware. The digikey connectors were suggested
because they were a direct fit for the OTS hardware on ONE END. You
still have to connect "wires" (not a digikey connector) to any bulkhead
unit you purchase or fabricate. If there is an intent to "standardize"
the use of digikey connectors for OTS hardware, please create an RFC (
http://www.psubs.org/guidelines/PSUBS/psubs_guideline_form.txt ) so we
can both document it and track it under a different email heading. Send
the form to me so I can add it to the RFC database and forward to the group.
OTS is discussed in these varied topics only because one or more members
already own that brand of equipment and have offered to let others use
it at the 2010 convention. Going through this whole exercise for the
sake of borrowing someone else's equipment for a once a year convention
seems to me not to be a good investment. Standardizing on a bulkhead
connector with a defined pin-out which can be use for borrowing someones
OTS equipment once a year AND having that same bulkhead available for
other equipment the rest of the year, outside the convention, in your
everyday use of your submersible, seems like a very good investment to me.
While underwater comms for the 2010 convention is currently driving this
discussion and RFC, we need to be cognizant that it represents only one
purpose for standardizing on a bulkhead connector and should not be
viewed in isolation. Standardizing on a bulkhead connector does not
prevent anyone who still wants to fabricate their own from doing so.
However, it does provide those who want a commercial solution with an
off-the-shelf, easy-to-purchase item; that if wired correctly will
conform to and work properly with any interchangeable equipment we
develop down the road designed for that bulkhead connector.
In time, we may certainly have more than one bulkhead connector defined
for other uses (6 pin, 10pin, etc) but this is a good place to start.
Subconn has expressed a sincere interest to work with our members
(unlike OTS) and already offered a respectable discount which I believe
we will see increased. The fact that a bulkhead connector can be
home-built does not preclude standardizing on a commercial unit.
Let's move forward and get this connector standardized.

So, is there still any interest in a standard bulkhead connector? My
main rationale for it was to connect OTS cables on any sub, but it
seems like with the cheap Digi-Key source of OTS connectors it isn't
needed anymore as everyone can make a cable set adapted to whatever
bulkhead connector they are using.
It would still be nice to standardize for other reasons, but no longer
necessary.
