It might be more than that. If we standardize on a connector and pin
layout, then we have a means of interchanging any number of devices that
are designed to work off of that connector spec. I like to think of it
similar to a USB where the pin layout and function is defined by the
spec, but there are thousands of different devices which have been
designed and fabricated to interface off of that one common connector.
