Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] RFC - Standard Thru-Hull Electrical Connector
Yes, you are correct this will be the first hardware standard we adopt
and I agree with your premise that it should be a quality connector that
*could* pass certification muster. The standard is also marked as
voluntary which allows for home-built units if someone wants to go that
route. Of course, for compatibility with the standard, the home-built
unit would have to be built to physically mate with the commercial
unit. This means we not only need to standardize the pin-out, but also
the geometrical layout of those pins and the dimensional properties of
the connector for those who want to build their own.

One further comment with regard to the proposed standard - this will
constitute the first specific hardware standard adopted by PSUBS (as
opposed to general hardware standards or operating procedures),
correct? In keeping with our recommendation to follow established
design guidelines, this connector, and indeed any other proposed
hardware standard (in contrast to individual or group-designed
components which are not required by our standard), should
consequently either have or be eligible for ABS, DNV or Lloyd's Type
Approval, and in the case of electrical equipment like connectors,
UL/CE/CSA rating as appropriate. I presume that the proposed
connector meets at least the latter, as it is a necessary condition
for sale in the United States?
