Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Lasers u/w [was:R300 Dive 3

The Airborne Laser Radar Mine Sensor uses a blue-green laser operating at
510 nm. Trials of this system has shown that the laser shadow cast by
objects under inspection produced the best results at depths of up to 200
meters.

Talking about laser (and sonar), I just read an interesting note called:

Lasers Make Huge Noises When Submerged (They could be used to calibrate
sonars)

** This isn't new tech. HBOI was using a pair of lasers to define the precise
** focal length for stills and video decades ago. That kind of thing is
** available through the camera manufacturers, I suspect. Don't know about
** long range, other than that Chris Chulimanus told me that green light
** works best.

** Lasers - I don't know the answer to your question, but . . .
**
** Now that you mention it: one way of calibrating the size of objects found
** u/w is to mount two lasers on your sub, one port the other stbd. They
** must be absolutely parallel & a known distance apart.
**
** The dome in a sub, or a diving mask, as most of us have experienced first
** hand, distorts the sense of size of u/w objects. The lasers allow for a
** quick estimate of the sizes of u/w objects by seeing where the laser light
** falls on the object (or off).
**
** Great for wrecks, large corals or fans, etc.

** This is probably a dumb idea and for sure it would not work in water with
** low visibility - but, assuming that you have very good visibility, very
** clear water, what if you shot a laser directly up from your sub ? how bad
** does a laser diffuse in water? It seems like you could do that and you
** might be able to detect the light on the surface using binoculars. During
** the day it would probably be difficult, but at night it might be possible.
