Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Paint on Galv.

I agree with you if one of the main objectives  was looks don't go galvanized but if you are looking for a strong coating for steel that does not scratch easy ,gets into awkward places, low maintenance and Lasts .I have sandblasted most of my machinery at regular intervals  as part of a maintenance plan and have always been amazed at the condition of the equipment that I made the effort to have sent for galvanizing which was 700km away up to 12 times the lifetime. In fact I have tried possibly every coating on the market but  I must admit I have never tried this coating JimK suggest .
Salt+ Steel =Rust
All the best

Hi Frank,

I was refering to galvanized steel only. Most good coating systems use a zinc rich primer as a first coat followed by high build epoxy.

I did not mean to imply that this was inappropriate, as a matter of fact it is the exact system I am using.

My first coat after sandblasting was Sherwin-Williams Corothane I Galvapac two pack zinc primer. This is a moisture cure urethane
system that requires the mixing in nof the zinc dust. Nasty side effects - Air supplied respirator
is needed. They also have many other zinc primers available.

My next two coats were                  Sherwin - Williams Macropoxy 646 a high solids two component epoxy.

Hope this helps. Sorry about any confusion I caused.

Best Regards,

Hi Jim. I've seen hot dipped assemblies painted on jobs I worked on. The most recent was two sets of stairs at a local college. Big, about 30 feet long and shipped out completely welded and  hot dipped.
After installation they were sanded a little to smooth out the galvy coating and spray painted. I assume it was an enamel. It smelled like a solvent based paint, maybe like "Rustoleum" or something.
Is there a paint that CAN be applied over a zinc coating that won't de-bond ?
The only time I've done it myself was painting lettering on the Zincalate paint mentioned before and like I said, after a year or so the lettering faded out. This is on the roof and it gets hot, cold, and weathered. Not submerged.
