Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] S101 Acrylic CT Specs from Owner

Hi Brent,
In case you haven t seen them already, there are many examples of cylindrical acrylic windows on the PSI subs:
psi.france.free.fr/
they use 8 prison bars to hold the big acrylic windows in compression (equivalent of 5m water depth)
to make good low pressure seal within all temperature ranges. the windows are mounted on a L shape support welded on a semi elliptical metal shell that forms the base of the sub.
there are interesting downloads, mostly in french though.

regards
Antoine

Greetings Alan,

You might want to check the link to the pictures once more. Since I sent the post, before I realized I have a number of other pictures that didn't relate to the CT.  No the SS bars don't hold any thing up. Rods like that are meant for retention loads, not compression. They  would just bend if they were. As the hydrostatic pressure increases, the rods just slide freely through both attachment holes.  They are to keep the seating rings for the acrylic cylinder tight against the acrylic seating surfaces, when at or near the surface. As well as deal with some hydrodynamic forces near the surface, and help in a collision.

That acrylic can easily handle the weight of that steel CT top section and the hydrostatic load at 100 meters down. It's a thick window.

You speak of the 2Dive sub. It has a crash cage over head, basically as I will have.  I'm hoping to be able to go without out the prison bars that the S101 has. My main issues are dealing with internal pressures over ambient and collision.  I think I've figured out both to my satisfaction. Now I'm just dealing with a design for a double overlapping V clamp that will make it so I'm not just one bolt away from braking, and ruining my dive day. The 2Dive sub is using bolts that go thru holes drilled in the acrylic bonded on flanges. I don't wish attach mine in that fashion.

I was joking with my sister in Iowa today, that I thought I was currently working in the New Zealand time zone. This proves it. ;}

Brent

Very good Brent, great photos.
You said the cylinder has to deal with the weight of the weldment above it. I thought the
supporting rods would be doing that. I know there was a sub with a similar cylindrical acrylic conning tower
that you posted recently with no supporting rods.
It must be difficult to set it up so that the acrylic seals top & bottom but doesn't bear too much weight.

I've received some pictures from Ellis Adams a little while back on his S101 that you Subdudes likely have not seen. They are here with some pictures I Took of the S101.

The acrylic conning tower cylinder dims are

   540 mm / 21.2598" ID,    300 mm / 11.81102362" tall,    44 mm / 1.73228346" thick

This cylinder has to deal with the weight of the steel weldment above it, collision, hydrodynamic and hydrostatic loads .

This subs general operating depth is 100 meters / 305 fsw.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are some answers to to my questions on the S101 specs and Ellis's answers in blue.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. What type and model of clutch is used on the diesel motor and/or the e Motor? Electric, belt-driven.

2. What type and model of 4.5 kW e Motor is currently installed?  Markon B21B (I understand it came from a British milk truck). Just serviced 2004

3. Do you have any more pictures of the engine compartment and the stern? section hull flange unbolted?  Attached

4. What type and model of gear box is currently installed?  2:1 PRM FNR gearbox

5. What is the purpose of the visible ball in the stern?  Fluxgate compass (area is all FRP)

6. Is there any crazing on the two acrylic component?  Yes--some of this can likely be polished out.

7. What is the OD, ID and height of the conning tower acrylic cylinder  540 mm ID, 300 mm tall, 44 mm thick

8. Is the conning tower acrylic cylinder sealed with two flat gaskets or a Sekaflex type sealant? Two flat gaskets plus two O-rings, top and bottom

9. What type of bearings and seals are installed in the aft head of the pressure hull for the main prop shaft?  John Crane 1A/1M bellows seal

10. Is the 1 3/4" thick forward viewport a blown or cast dome, and is the 25" measurement for the viewing area or OD?  Cast, I believe, 660 mm ID (25"), 44 mm thick

11. Do the bow planes flip up for better mooring?  Yes

12. Is the hatch locking means a three dog type, like is used on the Alicia sub, and do you have any pictures of the inside of the hatch? Yes, and still looking for pictures of it...

13. What is the ID of the conning tower hatch land and the lower acrylic cylinder flanges? 480 mm

14. What type(s) of steel was used to construct the main pressure hull skin and the support ribs. 10 mm 43A steel plate

15. When did the ABS certification run out, and what needs to be done to the sub to get it current with ABS? S101 was never built to class standards and can never be classed (frame spacing is not the way ABS wants to see it). The vessel meets most ABS specs.

16. Is there a keel cooling system for the diesel, and if so what type and pictures if possible. No, external cooling water supplied through double-valved inlet lines.
