I've received some pictures from Ellis Adams a little
while back on his S101 that you Subdudes likely have not seen. They are here
with some pictures I Took of the S101.
The acrylic conning tower cylinder dims
are
540 mm / 21.2598" ID, 300 mm / 11.81102362" tall, 44 mm / 1.73228346" thick This cylinder has to deal with the weight of the steel
weldment above it, collision, hydrodynamic and hydrostatic loads .
This subs general operating depth is 100 meters / 305

5. What is the purpose of
the visible ball in the stern? Fluxgate compass (area is all
FRP)
6. Is there any crazing on
the two acrylic component? Yes--some of this can likely be polished
out.
7. What is the OD, ID and
height of the conning tower acrylic cylinder 540 mm ID, 300 mm tall,
44 mm thick
8. Is the conning tower
acrylic cylinder sealed with two flat gaskets or a Sekaflex type
sealant? Two flat gaskets plus two O-rings, top and
bottom
9. What type of bearings and
seals are installed in the aft head of the pressure hull for the main prop
shaft? John Crane 1A/1M bellows
seal
10. Is the 1 3/4" thick
forward viewport a blown or cast dome, and is the 25" measurement for the
viewing area or OD? Cast, I believe, 660 mm ID (25"), 44 mm
thick
11. Do the bow planes flip
up for better mooring?
Yes
12. Is the hatch locking
means a three dog type, like is used on the Alicia sub, and do you have any
pictures of the inside of the hatch? Yes, and still looking for pictures of
it...
13. What is the ID of the
conning tower hatch land and the lower acrylic cylinder flanges? 480
mm
14. What type(s) of steel
was used to construct the main pressure hull skin and the support ribs.
10 mm 43A steel
plate
15. When did the ABS
certification run out, and what needs to be done to the sub to get it current
with ABS? S101
was never built to class standards and can never be classed (frame spacing is
not the way ABS wants to see it). The vessel meets most ABS
specs.
16. Is there a keel cooling
system for the diesel, and if so what type and pictures if possible.
No, external
cooling water supplied through double-valved inlet
lines.
