Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Vancouver + hotel accommodations
Hi, Ray,
The False Creek area is on the opposite side of Vancouver proper from
Nuytco - If you think of Vancouver as San Francisco, then North Vancouver is
across the harbor- just like Oakland.
There is a rapid transit ferry system called the 'Sea Bus' takes passengers
across the harbor from downtown Vancouver. It's a 15 minute ride. From where
the Sea Bus lands at a large market/hotel called Lonsdale Quay -it's about
a 5 minute walk to the Nuytco/Can-Dive shops. There are a number of pretty
reasonable hotels in the older area east of the Sea Bus (the Gastown area
and beyond) - and a lot quicker to get to the North Shore (North and West
Vancouver). West of the downtown area, Robson Street is full of small hotels
and that's a 10-15 minute drive to Nuytco.
False creek is further but it's all relative, I guess . . . it's about
30-35 minutes from False Creek to Nuytco. The Granville Island market at
false creek is pretty neat, also.
Sorry we haven't been able to give you much assistance with this stuff -
we're right in the middle of our 'crazy season' - just finished two major
submarine contract expeditions back to back ( google 'Living Oceans' and
'Pavilion Lake' - one 'L' in Pavilion - and you'll see what we've been up
to - Our 5 passenger, 1000' 'Curasub' is just back from pressure testing at
San Antonio, Texas (our pot isn't quite big enough to take that hull) and we
are stuffing it full of electronics and hydraulics prior for delivery to
'Sea-Aquarium' at Bapor Kibra, on the island of Curacao (google
sea-aquarium, curacao) slated for October. We have a crew leaving nextweek
for a deep pipeline project in South Korea, and on, and on! Sure not
complaining - just very busy!
As far as sub diving: by October the field operations should have slowed
down and we will have at least a couple of subs available - probably
Aquarius and one or two DeepWorkers.

Hi Jay,
The convention organizer, me, doesn't yet know where the diving or
conference room is going to be. Even the visit to Phil's place isn't nailed
down to his shop or his museum. Though fortunately those two are just half
an alley away.
Dave Walls and I had planned to go up on Friday, 21 August 2009 to meet with
Phil to finalize details. We are still going up.
Well since the group wants The Inn at False Creek. That is where we will
stay. We will drive to where ever the other events occur.
I will drive up from Oregon for the convention and can carry 4 in my car.
I can split a room. Last year's convention cost me $1,600. I have to
economize this year.
Regards,
Ray

Ron,Thanks for your offer of
recommending a hotel for us. We need to hear something
from our Conference organizer as most of us try to stay in
the same hotel. This makes for easing transportation
issues and allows members to socialize in between PSUB
functions. It is convenient if the hotel has a
conference room available also. Ideally the hotel is
centrally located to Phil Nuytten’s facility in North
Vancouver and where ever we are going to make dives with
subs. It helps to have a varied choice of dining
facilities close to the hotel.R/Jay Resepectfully,Jay K.

OK, remind me of the area of
Vancouver you want to stay in, or what hotels you have been
looking at and I'll see what I can recommend or find in
the area.
Aside from that, a
nice spot is the Inn at False Creek. http://www.innatfalsecreek.com/.
It's a decent place, central to most things, right on
the edge of Downtown and very close to Robson St (great
shopping) and Yaletown (great restaurants and brew
pubs).
