Hi Alec. 7018 is DC rod so don't feel bad about having trouble with a
buzz box. It can be done, but it's not good. AC is required for some welds like
aluminum but basically a "buzz box" is meant for things that a farmer would do
out in the field like gate repairs or any type of weld where quality and
appearance aren't important. Really just a waste of money to buy a buzz box, and
no good at all on a project like a submarine.
Steam fitters will use 6010 rod for root passes on pipe welds and then
cover with 7018 but the pipe is 60 series steel. If the base is 70 series, 6010
creates a weak spot. Not good for pressure vessels made of 70 series steel.
