Unless I'm missed something in the thread here, there seems to be no point in performing what you describe as a "hard" vacuum test. The issue you raised regarding internal components may or may not be valid depending upon what's inside. A storage container inside the cabin made out of sheet metal without any supporting ribs (for example) certainly could buckle under a hard vacuum test, so why risk it.

It appears that only a small vacuum is necessary to expose obvious leaks. If you intend to take your sub deeper than 33 feet, a "hard" vacuum test doesn't seem to provide any benefit over a "light" vacuum test.
