[PSUBS-MAILIST] PSUBS Project Pages
Hello psubbers,
The description provided by Doug Jackson regarding general public
project pages on PSUBS is not exactly accurate. I am currently
revamping the photo and journal section of the web site in stages. The
pre-existing project pages are now available via the top menu by
selecting Resources & Reference -> Photo Links. If you don't see the
"Photo Links" link, refresh the top frame where the menu is located
and/or clear your browser cache. Depending upon how your browser is
configured it may not automatically pick up the new link.
I have been spending a lot of time writing software to automate the
procedure of creating photo and project areas for both members and
general public. The first stage was writing software for our membership
which is now complete. The next stage is writing software for the
general public and luckily I should be able to reuse much of the
software already written, so the time required for implementation should
be quicker.
Currently, the member and general public photo sections are segregated
because it was easier to do it this way when developing the automation
software. Some members photo links may not work on the "photos" page,
but will work correctly on the "Members Project Journal" web page.
Other members photos links will work correctly on both pages. This is
just a ramification of the way various links were set up manually when
the original project page was created. When my work is complete
however, there will be one web link that brings you to a single web page
containing links to all photos, projects, (or however you want to think
of them) submitted by both members and general public.
We have always supported linking to project pages on other websites and
there are multiple examples of this including Carsten Standfuss, Dean
Ackman, Frank Dagleish, and James Frankland. This feature will
continue as in the past except that the process of setting up these
links will now be automated if you decide to take this approach.
In regards to storing photos directly onto the PSUBS server by the
general public however, this will change somewhat. The general public
can still submit "projects" and upload pictures to the PSUBS website,
but each of their projects will be limited to four photos. This should
be enough to satisfy the needs of most contributors who simply want to
share photos of their submarine (or visit to museum, etc) without
detailing the construction process. I chose this number because when I
reviewed submissions from various general public contributors over the
years, the vast majority provided four or less pictures. This change
affects only four people who have existing projects containing more
than four photos, but have not joined PSUBS as members. Two of these
projects will be "grandfathered" since they can still be considered
active, or even somewhat active. The other two projects will be frozen
as is because the subs are known to be either complete and/or sold, and
no more photos are expected from the original contributors.
Given the wide choice of free servers available to display photos
(flickr, frappr, snapfish, webshots, pbase, etc) there is plenty of
opportunity for the general public to find space to upload hundreds of
photos, and then link to those photos from PSUBS. All the
aforementioned servers provide easy to use interfaces and immediate
publishing without having to go through a third party to get your
material posted.
That is all. Back to your posts. :)
Thanks,
Jon
