Hi Frank, That would be great to get us all together. I've communicated with Brian a bit off list of late, and this will be a interesting adventure. I just remembered that the heads on my sub did not have any primer on them. Just the top coats, this is one reason why they rusted some and the outer tube section didn't, except at the bottom near the lead plates. I sanded some test areas on the front head and some on the tube section to see what was done. Here are the pictures. You can see some of the gray primer showing thru on the tube. http://cid-5085d10eb6afe47c.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Paint%20and%20Primer%20Issues/DSCN7387.JPG http://cid-5085d10eb6afe47c.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Paint%20and%20Primer%20Issues I'll have to read up on that zincalate primer you mentioned. I had been planning to use a commercial Sherwin Williams epoxy primer that you can add zinc powder to that a local guy I know used to used for metal docks. It might be the same primer that Jim K. is planning to use. I'll be doing all my own sandblasting, since I love it so much and I have the gear. ;)' I suppose you want me to bring my blasting pot down, and blast your hull? Subaru's get pretty fill up quick. Your sub was built a long time ago, and I'm sure the available
paints have gotten better since then. The grey paint is probably a zinc rich
coating if it's still in good shape after all these years. I have some paint
called "zincalate" that we used all the time when I was working and it lasts
many years. I have a friend who used it on a small metal ladder for his live
aboard sail boat, and it was still good after 5 years, submerged in salt water
for long periods. It's not cheap, but works. Will you be doing your own
sand blasting? I'm not at that stage yet, but will probably rent a blaster when
the time comes. Brian from Ojai may want to get together with us when you
visit. He's building a concrete sub. Frank D. A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps! |
