Joe,
Thank you for all your help and interest in this research!
To help you and others keep track of where we are now with this type of research...The comming year promises to be the year this will come full swing and give us many returns on our combined investments.
In the area of passive sonar contact location determination...This past Summer, we tested the six hydrophone array and returned with the following results...Each hydrophone was able to be selected as desired by using a microswitch controlled Hydrophone Selector Unit (HSU) as planned. It was hoped that by comparing hydrophones in pairs by training between them and using the 6 degree overlap, a better bearing resolution would be the result. Due to switch bounce playing on the preamplifier/amplifier circuits, too much time was needed for these elecronics to stabililze and a reliable hydrophone to hydrophone comparison was not possible. 60 degrees
(the assigned area of coverage for each hydrophone) was the best contact bearing location we could obtain at that time. Within this hydrophone array was placed 177 ping pong balls the purpose of which was to prevent sound from traveling thru this hydrophone array and being picked up by the hydrophones on the other side. (hydrophone isolation)
This Hydrophone Selector Unit is being rebuilt to use a stator brush system. It is hoped that this will remove the click bounce associated with the previous micro switches and allow for closer hydrophone to hydrophone contact comparisons. The number of hydrophones is also being increased from six to twelve and a better sound isolator is being incorporated in the array make up. I will be using the hydrophone enclosures tested down to 1273 feet by Jay recently as these are quite small in size. This selectivity, it should be noted, is primarily for the benefit of the larger psubs. Smaller subs would better benefit from a simple left side right side comparison with selectible full 360 degree coverage when this feature is not needed. This feature is already being built into the passive sonar/underwater communications consoles now being built and tested. The full simplified block diagram of these consoles will be provided so that anyone with minimum electronics skills could build such a unit with little or no outside assistance. The cost for this complete system appears to be at or around $200.00.
In the area of underwater broadband voi
ce communications...One completed console is now with Frank D. in Ca. and one is with Les Katschor in Michigan. A second unit is under construction with delivery scheduled to Les in the near future. It is with these two units once in Michigan that the actual in-water performance evaluations will be conducted perhaps by the Summer of this comming year. The primary testing will concentrate on the clarity of the overall communications as well as range determinations. The ease of use of the consoles themselves will also be evaluated and changes made based upon the testing results. Once these tests are conducted and the results evaluated, the units will be installed aboard the desination submarines for further evaluations.
It promises to be a busy but fun year ahead.

To all:
I am deeply touched on having been elected for this award.
With all that I have on my plate at this point in my life, It will be difficult at best to find the resources to build a boat of my own.
I have enjoyed working with so many great people on this hydrophone project...people who have spent many hours and freely given funding to see this thing finished. These are the unheard voices of this award as I could have done nothing without them...Dan H. and his machining skills who produced the aluminum hydrophone housing, Jay Jeffries w
ho sent several enclosures "over the edge", Gene Sues who listened when I needed someone to understand just how much we could use this tool, and the list goes on and on...In fact, this hydrophone was developed by practically half of the entire psub group!
Perhaps, should a convention be within my grasp to attend some day, I could catch a short ride on one of those magnificent diving machines, I would enjoy this very much. I look forward to seeing you all face to face some day...and thank you again!
