Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] New Submarine Project... Need Input.
Hi Bryce,
Sounds like a great project! I am not trying to rain on your parade, but I
hope that you don't mind a couple of my thoughts. My sub is about half done
and was originally designed designed as a diesel electric but changed to all
electric at this time because of complexity and cost. I have however welded
in pipe couplings to accomodate cooling water in and out, exhaust, intake
air and Prop shaft. These will be plugged but will allow a change without
welding on the pressure hull. My pressure hull is 48 inches diameter by 15
feet overall. While almost anything is trailerable, mine is getting to the
high end of what can reasonbly be hauled with a dually pickup truck. It will
displace about 15,000 pounds of water and with the weight of the trailer I
will be right around 20,000 pounds. Since I already have the hauling
equipment for my business this is not a big deal for me, but the next step
up is quite a large one.
While I thought of many variables for mine, I started with my requirements
like you have and then tried to fit the required equipment, ballast tanks
etc. in the smallest spot space that I felt was reasonable. I think that
will be your next step.
My sub will accomodate three people some what snuggly and would certainly
not be comfortable for very long periods of time. This and a lavoratory will
almost certainly dictate that your sub will be considerably larger than
mine. If you can do much of the work yourself I feel that you might be able
to accomplish the sub in your budget as mine is smaller and will be about
half of your budget when completed.
Please don't get me wrong, I am not trying to discourage you, but since I
think that my sub is the closest to yours in size and expectations I feel
that I can offer sound inputs.
My sub will be complete in a window of about 3 years from the initial
planning to completion but is a part time project as I need to work for a
living.
I wish you great success on your project and will be willing to help if
possible.
Best Regards,
Jim Kocourek

HEY EVERYONE! I have not been on here in quite some time but now that the
summer is here I am ready to embark on my project. I have figured mostly
everything out by going through the forums and such and have produced this
list of requirements. Have a look and let me know what you think.
