RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Shaft seals and bearing setup options.

At the risk of being way in the outfield...I just ordered a shaft seal intended for a 1" shaft rotating at a maximum of 270 shaft RPM with an external outside water pressure of 66 psi (I do not intend to go farther down than this) This is in the early stages of research. My drive shaft is 10' long max with a 10-1 gear reduction powered by a 1hp dc 24v motor with a max rpm of 1720. The battery arrangment has yet to be determined. The cost of this double seal is close to $80.00 and does not cover the enclsure. The prop is 18" in diameter and has seven blades. A second reduction gear containes 14-1 should this propellor not withstand this higher rotation force. The blades are individually changed and the overall performance so altered. I intend to incorporate PWM for control and adjustments for power efficiency.

Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Shaft seals and bearing setup options.

I hope everyone’s having a great weekend.

Do any members have any information on Shaft seals, what bearings would be required and in what configuration for a shaft that will be penetrating the pressure hull housed in a cylinder/pipe.

One thing I am trying to do is not re-invent the wheel. With this in mind I would appreciate any information anyone could provide with regard to the way they have or intend to seal your shaft and shaft housing and any other info you feel would be helpful.

I have been advised that Double Mechanical Seals provide the best shaft seal but I would be open investigating other options if anyone knows of a better alternative.

Regards
