Hi Dean. I don't have any tips on video cameras, but do plan on installing
one on my sub. I was thinking along the lines of a periscope that can swivel, so
I can see behind and beside the sub. I have a hole made for it in the hatch and
will plug it for now. Later, when I've got this thing running, I plan on making
a motorized housing that will rotate via electric motor, and have a clear dome
for the camera to see through. This way I only need a few wires penetrating the
hatch. I've looked at a few cameras and one with good depth perception and color
can be had for about $150. I like the small Sony because the picture was good,
but any good brand would work. The housing itself doesn't rotate, just the plate
inside with the camera strapped on.
A small video screen mounted inside, and the whole thing should be well
under $500. Haven't spent much time thinking on this yet, but I'm sure it's
pretty easy. With the wires sealed like any other electrical thru-hull, it won't
leak even if the housing fails. ( ouch! gotta buy a new camera?)
As for the mock-ups....ya, it's saved me some expensive mistakes. I like
the view from inside the sub, and can see up, down, and about 30 degrees to the
side. I may be adding two more windows later that are directly on the side just
forward of the side thrusters. I'd like to be able to see the angle of the
thruster/dive planes. Frank D. Need a new ride? Check out the largest site for U.S. used car listings at AOL Autos. |
