Dan is right. Cladding is done but of course by experienced guys. A mig gun
can be set up for ''spray arc'' when cladding. Lots of things get this treatment
to add a hardened ''wear layer'' like on backhoe buckets etc.
The beads are layed down with an overlap, are usually fairly low profile,
and are pretty easy to do with a little practice. Might be easier to plate the
whole thing, when you consider the cost of machining and polishing the surface
after laying down all those beads, plus the weld heat added to the assembly.
