Hi All,
I had only a drill press and had to make 9 viewport seats.
I had a 1/4 inch thick disc cut out with plasma at a local fab shop. Then I
scribed a circle on it with a compass. After this I divided the circle in 6
sections with the help of a triangle.
I center punched the intersections and drilled them out to
the tap drill size.
After completion, I simply clamped the template to my 9
retaining discs and viewport seats and drilled half of the holes, then moved the
clamps and drilled the other half.
Since I hand marked the holes and they are not perfect,
they work in only one orientation, however only you guys will know since any
deviation is not visible to the naked eye.
Incidently, I got this idea from Dan Hyerkofer, so I
cannot clain it as my own. It works fine and is not expensive.
Best Regards,
Jim Kocourek

Subject: RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Rotary Table
for Drilling View Ports and the Like
Hi
Brian, That sounds like a good
plan, but the UPS truck won't be able to drive up my driveway tell spring, so
I'll just have to snow shoe to your house to do some drilling. :)'
Besides that, I spent my big jar of nickels on new snow shovels, since I keep
braking them and they keep raising the prices on the good ones. I
think it's time to bring in a D9 bull
dozer. If a person only
has a drill press, I was thinking that if they wanted to make the
hole drilling on a viewport easier and economical, they
could clamp on a 2" X 4" or 2" X 2" wood fence to the drill press
table, with a piece coming out from it in a perpendicular fashion. Here
is a model of what I'm thinking would work.
http://www.frappr.com/?a=viewphoto&id=4001713&pid=9293149 I'm
lucky that on one of my two drill presses I have a large rectangular table
with a table saw type fence to assist in this sort of
operation. Cheers, Brent

Brent,
Get yourself a milling machine ! I just aquired a nice
Bridgeport last summer, the machining handbook gives you the formula for
drilling holes around a circle, once you have tthe diameter and the number
of holes you want it's real easy, some of the digital readouts have it in
their program.
Brian
James, It
looks like you could of used a rotary table on your drill press like this
one I'm planning on acquiring, to make the drilling of your viewports
a lot easier. http://www.grizzly.com/products/g9299 I'm
also considering aquiring this XY Cross table for my drill press, until I
can upgrade to a large Mill/Drill.
