Psubbers,
What are these drug boats - I mean they seem to be
build in large numbers ( hardly "homemade" ) but do they dive with ballast tanks
- e motors and pressure hull ?
If they are indeed "real" submarines I find it
quite surprising that they are detected since a small sub. A non
aggressive sub going deep and silent is a very difficult sonar target even
today. I don´t clam that such as boat is undetectable, only that its
difficult and takes quite a big navel force ( surface vessels, maritime patrol
aircraft and the like )
I have talked with navy ASW officers on the
subject - and their view is - based on
experience with old Russian
whiskey diesel subs that even today its not in any
way a simple task to detect a submarine that must not let go of its stealth
in order to attack or undertake espionage.
BTW - smuggling submarines is one place where super
Li ion batteries would be very nice. A deep diving, electric only - slow and
very silent boat would be perfect for that mission.
Being the devils advocate - its smuggling drugs
worse then using submarines to hide nuclear weapons to ensure the destruction
of all life on the planet if the need for this emerges ? Or using
submarines in other warfare such as ensuring that Japanese sailors will be eaten
by sharks or US sailors will freeze to death in the cold grey Atlantic
?
I my humble opinion smuggling its a shitty
mission. like the other four examples is shows a nice technology used for an
evil purpose. I condemn the crew and their on shore commanders in all
mentioned scenarios to about the same extent.
Second, drug subs may make psubs less welcome
in some places and may provoke trubble with custums.
Sad.
Best regards,
Peter Madsen

I also agree. Just because it can dive, does not make it
a submarine.

I agree...if its tube like and low in the water, it must be a
