Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] drug boats

Recently re-read my copy of Sea of Grass, detailing the drug interdiction effort of the 1970's and 1980's.  If there is one conclusion you can make based on the stories recounted in that book, it is that the smugglers' successes far outnumbered their failures until the interdictors infiltrated or otherwise compromised the smugglers' organizations.
Low profile stealth boats were very successful in the 90's.  One would think that (semi) submersibles would be just as successful, if not more so.  From reading the articles, the Coast Guard assists the Local Navy boys, indicating to me, they have intel on when and where to look.
My guess is that plenty are getting through.  You just don't (obviously) hear about them.

There is big money to be made.  Which is why they keep catching them.  About the only real drug submarine was the one that was being built in 2000.  However, it was captured before construction could be completed.  However it all goes back to WW1 with the SMS Deutschland.  What they have now is not a submarine.  If anything, it is a submersible.  They might as well be using the CSS Hunley.

I do not wish to dwell on this subject too long, but with so many failed attempts to run drugs aboard these "boats", I cant help but feel that a few do get by. Why else would these people continue to attempt this method so many times. I wonder if these vessels are simular one from another.

I also agree.  Just because it can dive, does not make it a submarine.

I agree...if its tube like and low in the water, it must be a sub!
