Alec-I know of a couple places (not off the top of my head) that have tools that can measure oxygen, and will try to find the for you. When I do I will let you know.

I got the sub and would test, but I don't have any monitoring equipment. We'll, I guess if I sat in the sub for a while and blacked out, one could assume the cartridge has gone it's limit.Dan H.----- Original Message ----- From: "Bryce Yarbrough" <byarbrough@mac.com>To: <personal_submersibles@psubs.org> Sent: Thursday, October 04, 2007 1:50 PM Subject: Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Hello EveryoneHmm.. what a predicament.. Well if I had a sub, I would volunteer for sure. Any other way to test it besides in a sub? perhaps a sealed room or chamber that can simulate the small confined space of a sub?Bryce On Oct 4, 2007, at 8:40 AM, Ray Keefer wrote:Hi Bryce, At the convention Jonathan announced the details of a scrubber project that PSUBS LLC is sponsoring. We need a willing voluteer and an instrumented hull to test the current design. Esentially the design just hooks a fan onto an existing off the shelf CO2 absorber cartridge. To date no volenteers, hence no progress, no finail design to share with the community. Perhaps it came up in September, for which the archives are not up yet. Who knows. :-) Bryce On Oct 4, 2007, at 12:09 AM, Sean T. Stevenson wrote:Bryce, welcome to the list. You obviously have alot ofquestions. Many of these can probably be answered with some furtherresearch. Aside fromscouring the internet for answers, a few goodplaces to start wouldbe: Rules for Building and Classing underwatervehicles, systems andhyperbaric facilities, ABS Safety standard for pressure vessels for humanoccupancy, ASMEConcepts in submarine design, Burcher and Rydill Manned submersibles, Frank Busby and of course, everything on the PSUBS website. To address a couple of your specific questions offthe top of myhead - active sonar is an indispensable tool for underwaternavigation, and thereare many units available for a wide variety ofapplications. Radar is onlyreally practical on a large sub with significant heightof antenna - wherethis makes sense, you can simply pressure compensateit. As for throughhull linkages, you can achieve linear motion, but it isusually betterto stick to well constrained rotary motion and convert that asnecessaryoutside the hull. Depth determination by sonar, typicallyreferred to as analtimeter, is not robust. Depth determination is usuallyperformed with apressure transducer. While there are few if any rules thatpertainspecifically to recreational submersibles, they are watercraft andas such aresubject to the International Regulations for the Prevention ofCollisions at Sea.The FBI is aware of PSubs. Your responsibility as adesigner is merely tobe as prudent as possible - while you may not certifyyour sub to ABS orequivalent standards (an arduous and expensive process), itcouldn't hurt todesign to those specs wherever possible. The safer we are,the better chancewe have at staying deregulated. Radio does not propagatewell throughwater, except at extremely low frequencies. GPS will not workwhen submerged.Underwater navigation is achieved in most PSubs simply by acombination ofsonar and dead reckoning. In more advanced systems, aninertial measurementunit can provide position estimated based on accerationsintegrated overtime - such position estimates are subject to integrationerror (inverselyproportional to the cost of the IMU), and must be correctedoccasionally. Thereare many different CO2 scrubbing systems - check the listarchives.Good luck! -Sean On October 3, 2007 20:34:42 Bryce Yarbrough wrote:Hi Everyone! I am knew to this mailing list and site, but notthat new to theworld of submarines and robotics. I have beenactively involved inrobotics throughout high school and have beenworking with them forover 6 years now. I also built a small R/CSubmarine, and havedecided that a goal of mine is to build asubmarine. With the help ofmy high school (we are doing it through therobotics club as aproject, great way to get materials, electronics, and money donatedto the submarine) we are going to build a sub. Weare looking atabout 30 Feet long with a 5 or 6 foot beam. Ihave run into severalquestions, that even despite my research, Icannot answer at thistime, so I am turning to you guys :-). (btw I am19, just to let youknow). My questions are (at the moment that I canthink of):-How do you seal up a hole in the pressure hullthat contains anysuch motors to control the dive planes orrudders, if the linkagesmove forwards and backwards through the hole, instead of just turning(any other ideas on the subject would be great) -We have decided that we want to use a LifeSupport System involvingscrubbing the CO2 out of the air, and releasingO2 into the air whenneeded. -- Anyone figured out a great system to do thiswith yet?--Anyone have sensors and such equipment yet? -To recharge the ballast tanks, we want to use anonboard electricair compressor (I just don't like the thought offuel onboard theship), anyone have any suggestions on which onesto use, things tolook out for? -Navigation/Electronic Equipment: -- Sonar: ---Any systems that anyone USES for their subs, how well they work, etc? ---Hydrophones yet? --- Active Sonar Systems? --Radar: ---Does anyone use radar for when they are onthe surface?=== message truncated ===____________________________________________________________________ __ ______________ Fussy?
