But the small bevel that is on the transition between the reinforcing ring
and conning tower is so short that I doubt it makes much of a difference.
It may have some mechanical properties but I think most of what it does is
cosmetic.
A radius corner or a long transitional change on any part is to spread
out the stress concentration and reduce the chances of cracking. This is
especially true in fatigue loading, where the load is in alternating
directions. The tension part of the cycle causes the cracks.
In that area of a K-sub the loading is almost all compression. True,
there are cyclic forces when you go down and back up, but not really
severe. Most likely, the stresses captured in it from the welding far out
weighs the effects of having a bevel or not.
