Sirs,
I have followed the argument on diver lock
outs...and feel that the subject "what works for the amateur submariner"
deserves a comment.
I my humble opinion - being an amateur means you
have a small budget and limited resources in terms of just about anything. Being
successful here means making the best of it by using your brain instead of the
money you don´t have.
I think amateur submarine designers should make use
of the all knowledge that they can get hold on - including how the navy does
things. After all the majority of submarines are weapons, and the do things that
are just fantastic by any standard and kill surprisingly few crew members in the
process.
Personally - this is a question of taste of cause -
I design submarines as "civilized" navel boats - same propulsion - same
shape - same color - same buoyancy control -
same sensors. All of cause in a "slightly" simplified form. The only non -
naval stuff on Freya, Kraka and UC3 is the viewports. Having made just
over seven hundred dives in these boats - I feel that I can say the concept
of copying and simplifying navel principles of submarine operation
works.
Most psubbers seam to lean against making a
small Alvin or a personal tourist submersible - and this may be the very
best solution if you can find a way to deploy it to the diving
location. I can certainly see the idea of a K250 - or the Nemo - or Sgt.
Peppers - but the operational problem with these boats remains how to get out
there. The Euronaut - and Anders Jung´s Marlen and my own Kraka - and UC3
are all examples of psubs with a navel submarine in the stomach...and if I did
not think that was a feasible way of doing it - I would not have welded on
the bow of her today...
Don't say we can´t learn from the navy...but don´t
forget that at the end of the day what fascinates people about building
submarines at home...may be very different - and there is no correct way - only
options...
Best Regards,
Peter
