The welding machine you need I think depends on which way you come down
on a fundamental decision -- which welds you plan to do yourself. For my
part I've been building things since I was a teenager, but long ago came
to the realization I was no welder. I can stick metal together, sure. So
I weld all the little brackets, the cradles and cranes, even the
internal stiffeners. But for the things your life really depends on, I
hire out the work. For the minor jobs I do myself, I use an ultra cheap
stick welder that I probably bought off Harbor Freight, and I find it
adequate. It's an AC welder, and I recall Dan Lance saying that a DC
would spatter less. But it's ok for my modest needs. 

For me, the choice is what welder to use in the sense of the person, not
the machine.

Hi,

For lunch today I dropped by the local AirGas store to look at welders.
I wanted something I can use on the farm  and to weld submarines. 

Submarines got him. I mentioned welding 1/4" HY-80 steel. The guy
visibally bristled with his superior expertise and said I would need
$10,000+ equipment to weld. 

Out of my price league and probably dead wrong.

You guys that have built subs, what welders do you have? Did you weld
the pressure hull yourselves or did you part that out? If you parted out
welding the pressure hull did you supply the welder or did the welder
bring his own?
