RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST]saturation diver lockout

Øystein,

There is a difference between sat diving and tech diving at depth with rebreathers.  As you note, sat diving is VERY equipment intensive...many orders of magnitude over tech diving (which uses a lot of equipment by itself).  Drysuits negate the need for a hot water system and suit and argon extends the exposure time in cold water with a dry suit by increasing the insulation effectiveness by about 50% over air (and about 300% over HeOX…can’t remember the exact number but you get the idea).  The argon is not breathed just used for insulation augmentation in the suit.  While the Norwegian government may have banned argon insulation for their oil patches, it is utilized around the world by various navies and tech divers.  An even more effective insulation augmentation gas is sulfur hexafluoride, a denser gas with about 4x the effectiveness of air.

In the early 90s, developed a suit, insulation package, and a tie-in to a small additional outside heat source that circulated warm water through a tube suit next to the skin similar to what the astronauts use for SEAL SDV members so that they could survive 12 hour exposures in Arctic waters.  Also worked on parts of the associated 12-hr. mixed gas rebreather.

Carsten’s method of mixed-gas rebreathers, drysuits, and argon is the ideal package size for use with his submersible.  It will be great to see some of the finds that he makes with this system.

R/Jay

Yes, this is true if you wanna go sat diving on your own. But you will

never be able to reach the criteria for diving in for example the

north sea for the Norwegian gouverment or any of the oilcompanies up

here. Argon in dry suits has been tested and found not approved years

ago. When diving on trimix the gas is reclaimed, treated and heated

befor it goes back to the divers. Actually the system these days are

much more complicated then back in the 70.

The biggest problemsduring sat diving is loss of hot water. Because of

the Helium you breath you can risk freeze to death long time before

you can get rescued if the sumarine looses its power.
