Hi, Chad - I may have missed this in one
of your postings, but, would you mind telling us how you intend to use your
sub?

simplicity is what I am looking for. would it be a bad idea to build the
sub so that one could simply bolt on different sys for experimentation without having to cut and weld on the hull but
rather bolt on a new system kind of like a port hole. if you decide to try
something out new just fabricate it and bolt it on. if it works better great.
If it doesn't go back to the old. I am not
bucking you at all sir. I take all you have said in complete respect as
someone with experience. I am looking at
this as a hobby of experimentation with safety kept foremost. I will be looking at a budget of
$5000-$10000. this is more than I had planed when I committed myself to this idea. it sounds like a lot to me but I realize that it isn't much for
a project like this. I only wish that someone could show me how some of these
systems are built. the new hydraulic pump was intended for those who already
have a hydro system in there boats as a possible aid to alleviate there discomfort. I ultimately like your idea. would you think it would be a bad idea
to seal off the motor compartment if a thru hull shaft design was desired? and
what is your opinion you using thru hull
shafts using bolt on water pump assemblies for something like 200' max or even
100'. please continue, Chad Beller

Chad,
While all
this sounds good you need to look at the entire system and compare it against
other methods of propulsion for efficiency, simplicity, reliability, safety,
and cost. The same goes for hull firms, ballast systems, etc. Just
because one method looks good doesn’t mean
that it will work. Read carefully the Design Spiral
article.

Puting noise asside. For those interested HALDEX makes a pump that boast a 90% efficientcy over all and low noise. It is discribed as a through bore bushing type pump
with extruded aluminum housing and cast iron covers with a pressure balanced
design. sorry about the other one. Sometimes my laptop just sends stuff in
middle of typing. as soon as I find out how to stop it I will. Chad Beller

From recent
reading for my Naval Architecture program, hydraulic powered propulsion system
are one of the most inefficient ~30% of pump drive shaft HP makes it to the
propeller. As to noise, you can go through all the problems of sound
isolation but there is still excessive flow noise.

idea
someone mentioned that hydraulic drive sys being loud
inside the sub. is this true? and if this is true could the noise be reduced
by mounting the motor and pump on rubber mounts and insulating? still considering hydraulic instead of sealed assembly "I have found a bolt up solution in granger
catalog". many have said that they get plenty of power from the hydraulic system. efficientcy for
extended use is more my concern.
