[PSUBS-MAILIST] Re: PSUB wreck diving

Hi Rick,

You've just touched upon (one) of my reasons for having abandoned the ambient design in favor of a K350 based 1atm.....our area wrecks and artificial reefs!

That helicopter pad on her stern is a planned destination for me... :), providing of course, another storm doesn't reorient her again. As you have no doubt read, there can be some current there, so the K350 as is needs power and buoyancy modification but, the wreck is within tow able range.

Spiegel Grove was reefed relatively recently, and I have not had the pleasure but, over the years I've visited many of the shallower wrecks in the area. It's a real treat, and there are many within the no decompression limits and many more a bit deeper but, still under 200'.

Now if you really want to salivate a bit...here is another new one...the USS Oriskany on the Gulf side up the coast toward the panhandle.

http://www.mbtdivers.com/Oriskany%20Misc.htm

"Top Gun" fans will remember the Oriskany as the ship Mavericks instructor "Viper" referred to in the movie......."Yea...I flew with your old man...VF__ the Oriskany, he was one heroic son of a bitch that one!"

This one is a bit of a problem for a psub surface support wise, as she lies some 20 miles offshore in 200' of water....but nice clear water it is on a white sand bottom. The conditions here are apparently quite nice and one would be tempted to actually "penetrate" the hull via the huge hangar bay doors.

However, this would violate some predetermined "rules" of operation that I plan to adopt as modeled after WHOI for Alvin........

http://www.whoi.edu/marops/vehicles/alvin/userman_operations.html

....Substitute "Octopus" for Alvin and 350' for the depths, but I do believe Alvin violated this rule of overhangs for the "Titanic" when she ventured under the overhanging stern section to get a look at the screws. I suspect with proper surface support and "local" knowledge, the Oriskany's hangar bay may be doable as a "once in a lifetime opportunity".

If you want real clear water Rick, what Jay has over there in the Bahamas makes what we have look like a sewer!
