Hi Simon. I totally agree with you.
The sad fact is...the U.S. government doesn't want
to waste its money in raising the wrecks or even in some cases to recovery the
remains
of the crew. We DO have a government military war
dead remains retreival unit in Hawaii that is susposed to recover any military
remains when found.
I have spoken with the director there and know how
to contact him if I ever run across any remains in military aircraft
crashed and sunken in my area.
However, if it is problematic to recover the
remains and costly, the government frequently avoids the issue by declaring the
site a "war grave" and
dismissing any other efforts of recovery. A
conveinent excuse when costs are high to recover remains. Our government gives
lip service to honoring our
war veterans, yet they continue to cut veterans
benifits as well as their retirement benifits. I recently read where the
deductable for retired veterans
getting prescriptions for viagra as well as other
prescription drugs has been raised. Our government has to ACT like they
care about veterans to be
politically correct and for compassionate
appearance to the public. But the reality is many in our government do not care
about veterans, their benifits,
the whereabouts of their remains,
or otherwise. I recently read in a magazine published for retired
military officers of statements by senators, congressmen
and other government officials, they they viewed
the costs of supporting veteran benifits as not productive and not furthering
our war on terrorism or in the
general public interest. So much for our
government's phoney compassion and honor of our war dead and war
graves. Our government doesn't even care about our LIVING
war veterans. Our veterans only get what they do
now because it would not look good to the public if the government cut the
veterans off totally, but if they could, they would.
The fact is, the only time the government REALLY
cares about our service people is when they are defending our government and
keeping that governments power status quo.
Once they are lost, dead or old, they are of no
further use to the government and just a costly liability. Case in point is when
a Navy commander recently had his command taken
away from him for a scuffle he had with a foreign
security guard because the commander did not have his I.D. on him to return to
his ship. The Navy releived the commander of his
command over the incident and that pretty much
amounts to ending any chance he had for any future in the Navy. In peacetime we
forget our Pattons and the need for the competent
officers it costs so much to train. If that had
been WW2 nothing would have been done to the commander at all. Bottom line is
what you said Simon is the complete truth.
Bill.
