Hi Andy.
Yes I have heard of cryogenic
tempering.
It has been used on Chinese copies of the U.S.
M1A rifle (semi auto ONLY M14) to retemper metal parts to
conform to U.S. military specs.
A small amount of the Chinese M1A copies imported
into the U.S. were not properly tempered and there were some
problems
with operating rods bending and the actual
receivers and bolts wearing improperly on some of them. There are companies
that you can send your Chinese copy
M1A to, that will retemper it to proper U.S. specs
using cryogenics. It is a bit pricey but not overly so for small parts like
rifle parts. The piece of mind
it would give you with your firearm is well worth
the extra expense. They even restamp the parts with their company name so it is
apparant the process was done to them.
I have heard of it thru firearm publications and
articles, but I do not know how expensive or viable it would be for
submersibles. Although I have a general working knowledge
of submarines and submersibles, my hands on
experience is limited to wetsubs and sometimes I make mistakes even with that!
Lol.
Some of the other fellows here that build pressure
hulls and are light years ahead of me in expertise and knowledge might know
something more.
Kindest Regards,
Bill Akins.

Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Cryogenic
Tempering
Has any one heard of or used Cryogenic Tempering? The
freezing parts from -150 to -300 degreed F to reduce internal stress? I
just heard of it. Apparently NASA uses it for space components and
Racecar people use it to reduce wear on engine components and provide better
dimensional stability. It seems expensive though. But might it be
useful in a
submersible?
Andy
