Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Article on collision of USS San Francisco

It was on t.v. wednesday night Cliff. My wife taped it for me. They really squashed the bow didn't they? They almost lost that boat. Killed one guy and critically injured others.

The navy disciplined the commander and took away his command but the truth is the navy gave him a faulty chart which did not show

an obstruction. Another chart onboard however did show the obstruction. The Navy of course did not discipline itself or anyone else for giving him a faulty chart

and instead criticized the commander for not checking BOTH charts. They had a point but you see how they covered their butts don't you?

They did the same thing when the gun turrent blew up in the battleship some years ago. My dad was a submariner during all of WW2  from 1941 and until 1946 or 1947 (I forget) but

my experiences with the Navy when I was in the Marines and from what I have read then and afterwards convinces me not to believe anything the Navy says.

As with all the services, they are eager to find a convienent scapegoat.

Kindest Regards,

Bill Akins.

FYI:  Interesting article on the collision of the USS San Francisco and a
submerged mountain about 360 miles southeast of Guam.  The boat, submerged
at 500 ft, crashed at top speed of 33 knots.
