There is a french guy in the south of france who is building an egg shapped submarine using fiber glass.
this guy runs a fiberglass company, has built a plane in epoxy fiberglass plans to use his sub unit at 15 atms at least.
He is building his unit with the help of french engineers working on nuclear submarines in toulon (where all french nuclear subs have been made)
The builder says that using steel is certainly a good thing but that there is no reason why a sub could not be made of fiberglass provided the resistence calculations have been properly made.
I have personnaly dived in a 40 sits tourism sub-marine in monaco , the sub hull was totaly made in a transparent resin (very thick), so i see no reason why a sub could not be made in a plastic material.
On the other hand i could note that this kind of building requires bigger means than the traditional stell hulls, it cant' be done in a small garage, requires big moults , amtmosphere control (humidity and temperature).
I will take some photos and publish the hull to share with the group (with the autorization of the builder).
and we will se the result soon.
Personnaly i am really interrested in the result cause i would like to built an un motorized sub five meter long designed to welcome divers for 4 days with the possibility to reduce the pressure up to surface pressure at the end of stay.
The sub will have to withstand a pressure of 3 bars .
And i want to do it in fiber glass.
I have asked question on this list about fiber glass , and got no anwser except a coupe of posts saying it was not advisable to do so.
so i think that guys here down must have reason to think so but it must be because of practical reasons.
or maybe am I a stupid newbie dreamer that has nothing to do here ??????
