Hi Herve.
Robert Fulton of steamboat fame and submarine fame
was experimenting with firing cannons underwater way back in the 19th century.
He even wrote former president Thomas Jefferson about his experiments and sent
him drawings of which
Jefferson was very enthusiastic. Here's the link
with the letters and drawings that tells all about it. http://www.history.rochester.edu/steam/thurston/fulton/chapter5.html
Imagine arming your subs with underwater
machineguns. Maybe even upsized to special 50 cal or 20 mm ammo with explosive
projectiles. Then not only could your subs detect and notify the surface ship of
a threat from a submarine or enemy divers but they could take
action themselves.
Here's a link to a site that shows a russian kalishnikov influenced design
of an underwater machinegun. Imagine mounting this on the exterior of
your sub so it could be remotely aimed and fired by the operator similiar
to the chain cannon on our
Apache helicopters.
A small killer sub like I just described should be used by the navy and several
of them always deployed in the water for protection of our carriers any time
they are not moving.
Like you said, once detected there is only a couple
of minutes to react. Killer minisubs could do just that. Stick one of these on
your sub and resubmit it to the navy for reevaluation.

I used to love the old t.v. series "Seaquest" and
before that "Voyage to the bottom of the sea" Seems fiction is becoming
reality.
Kindest Regards,
Bill Akins.
