There are several things that should be part of one's *must accomplish*
checklist and will add credibility to your personal paperwork.

One is to get a diver's certification and two, take a Coast Guard
approved
boating safety and rules of navigation course.  Various organizations
offer
the safety courses like the YMCA/YWCA, Red Cross, and boating clubs.

Also, there is a correspondence type course with video tape and manual
available for the basic boating safety course. Your local library may
have
these materials or obtain them for you thru inter-library exchange.
