Marathon bot: Most drones run on gas or diesel fuel. Once their tanks are empty, the robots have to come home to be replenished. But ONR's Seaglider drone is different: It doesn't burn fuel at all. The pink, dolphin-shaped, 110-pound robot is propelled by changes in buoyancy. That's why the Seaglider recently set the record for the longest robotic stint at sea -- 5 months and 1,677 miles.

By inflating a sack the size of a few shot glasses, the Seaglider alters its volume ever so slightly, causing it to dive or rise to the surface. That up-and-down motion is then turned into horizontal actions by the glider's wings. Shifts in the drone's battery pack cause it to turn.

Eleven of the drones have been built so far, with another 11 about to be shipped from the factory, said Neil Bogue, an ONR-funded research scientist at the University of Washington's school of oceanography.

They have been used mostly for underwater climate studies. The Seagliders' sensors can pick up changes in ocean salinity, chlorophyll concentration and dissolved oxygen. But in the future, the drones could be converted to more-martial purposes. The Seaglider might become an early warning force for mine hunters -- one that never has to stop to refuel.
