Dan, No I am not using the prop shaft that I
got at the boat yard for a prop shaft. I'm cutting the prop shaft, which
is 1 1/2" in diameter, into 3" long pieces, then I"m machining those pieces
into thru hull fittings.

Are you considering using an O-ring seal for a
through hull prop shaft seal?
O-rings are a good seal for shafts that turn a
few turns slowly but there are better seals for prop shaft seals. For
that you should consider a seal made for a water pump shaft.
They're usually, carbon against ceramic, spring loaded seals.

Right there was nothing wrong with the seals, I never said there was
anything wrong with the seals. The material I am using for shaft and
thru hull is 1 1/2" dia. solid 316 stainless steel.

I think you should check your facts on this one, I don't
believe parker had any interest in manufacturing those rings.
Besides, there was nothing wrong with the seals. They where never designed
to operate at the temperature that morning, it was to cold, thats
all. You may also want to look at an alternate procedure for your
junk pile through hull shat fitting. The type of fitting your
refuting to is a stuffing box and is good for only about one atmosphere,
plus it is designed to drip water for cooling and lubrication.
Note: Parker is the company that supplied the "o" rings for the space
shuttle that blowed up. But maybe nasa didn't check the
specs?
