For a certified diver a flood vale and an open hatch is an easy, cheap
way to home, wife, girlfriends, there childrens.. 

Days later on he can dive back to the sunken sub - free the sub from
what ever - close the hatch with the small valve in the hatch open. 
Blow air from a pipe from a surface boat compressor into this valve -
the water in the boat will move out of the boat by the open flood-
valve.. now called drain and rescue valve.. ;-)
