Mike,

A rubber ball may get sucked down the tube at depth.  K-subs use hard
plastic.   Instead of a ball, the K-sub snorkel uses an inverted plastic cup
in a stainless tube.  It also had a valve inside the sub to block off the
snorkel when diving.
