[PSUBS-MAILIST] Snorkels

I was reading about the development of the snorkel in the German
boats of WW2.   There are some good drawings of how the snorkel
works.

But how is it done for psubs?   Just a curved tube with a rubber 
ball in a cage?   Or is there some other approach that works better?
What's on the Kittredge boats?
