Thanks for the response. I've been following the OSS in the archives. I 
wish you the best success. In fact I'm very interested in the concept 
of open source development of hardware (or more properly of plans for 
hardware). I'll be very interested to see how the OSS turns out.

Right :-) the boundary between amateur and professional is often very 
fluid in areas of human endeavor that are growing and dynamic. Even 
mature areas often have a vigorous amateur community with a porous 
boundary between hobbyist/amateur/tinkerer and people who have figured 
out how to make a buck doing what they love.

This is true, but sort of orthogonal to my interest. I am interested in 
the extremes, which inevitably will involve people who either start out 
with some advantage or who are exceptionally persistent. I expect that 
the subs I'm interested in will turn out to be the second or third subs 
built by the builder.
