Thats the way we did it on the yard :
- first a layer of paint, dry
- second layer of paint, with areas witch should not get sand surface
covered with tape.
- sprinkle fine sand in large quanties in the wet paint of the
second layer.
- after the paint is dry, remove the lose sand by besom and
remove also the tape.
- then roll the final paint
