I guess this sand in the paint thing is really big so I thought I might say something too.  I've done quite a bit of the non skid stuff and I've found that it easer to put down a coat of paint and while it's still wet, I sprinkle the sand over it with a can with holes in it.  Like a salt and pepper shaker.  After it dries I put a second light coat over it.  This has worked very well..  There is also a product that is made for this ...It is crushed up cork.  It's very fine and you can kneel on it with out hurting your knees.  In stead of sand...
