Yes, actually you could if you had the financial resources to do so. I
personally do not, nor do I have the expertise to design and build such a
homebuilt aircraft but someone like Burt Rutan or Jim Bede could, easily, if
they so wished. There area about 30 privately designed, built and owned jets
registered in the United States right now.

Or it is possible, with sufficient funds to purchase a former US military
aircraft which would have to be licensed under the FAA "Experimental"
category to go fast than the speed of sound. We had an F-104 at the EAA
museum which was flown by the "Museum" and it was capable of breaking the
sound barrier, though because of its value to the collection it was not
flown in this manner.....
