Actually PWM controllers are considerably easier on electric motors than
reostats. Reostats reduce the voltage and cause considerable heat build up at
low speeds and powers. Motors that are duty cycle controlled don't have this
problem, which is why almost everything electrical has switched to this type
of controller.
